Our Company's History
Tully-Wihr was founded in San Francisco shortly after the 1906 earthquake. Located on Lower California Street, the original company made all types of rubber and metal stamps, from printed plates to branding irons.

In 1928, John Tully sold the business to Frank Gemmell, who operated the company throughout the depression and into the World War II years. Known then as Tully’s Inc., the firm continued to handle the original basic product line. A large contract from the United States Marine Corps was important to the company’s growth in the war years.

Toward the end of World War II, Mr. Gemmell foresaw major changes for the printing industry. Brass and rubber printing plate products were dying out, and offset lithography was becoming state of the art. Mr. Gemmell hired six sales people to sell stationery and other printed items. Much of that printing was subcontracted to the Wihr Printing Company. When George Wihr died in 1945, Mr. Gemmell bought that company and Tully-Wihr was born.

In 1950, Arthur Bowe and Bob Wiecking—two former Brown and Bigelow printing salesmen—acquired the company. They kept the name but completely changed the direction of the firm over the next few years. The stationery line was dropped and emphasis was given to business forms and commercial printing. The company became a California corporation in 1964.

Shortly after Mr. Wiecking died, Mr. Bowe decided to retire, and, on January 1, 1970, he sold the company to two of his salesmen, Don Knoll and Charles Miller. Over the next 25 years, the firm experienced phenomenal growth, with Mr. Knoll as President and Mr. Miller as Vice President. Annual sales grew from $500,000 to over $12,000,000. In January 1979, a manufacturing plant was opened and the number of Tully-Wihr employees grew from 7 to 55. Although Don Knoll is now deceased and Charles Miller is retired, Don’s son Gerry Knoll serves as President of the company. Along with Gerry Knoll, the other principals include Douglas Dunn, CDC, Chief Operations Officer, Jim Knoll, Vice President, and George W. Smith, CDC, Vice President of New Business.

Tully-Wihr’s current management has maintained many of the philosophies of past ownerships, including an emphasis on product quality and a commitment to outstanding customer service. Building on this foundation, we have expanded our market area, manufacturing facilities, and product line. We look forward to continued growth through the ongoing expansion of our most important asset—our diversified list of satisfied customers.

Tully-Wihr is among the top ten percent of printing and business forms distributors in the country and is one of Northern California’s largest independent business forms distributors. “Independent” means that we are not tied to any single manufacturing plant to produce the products we sell. Our own manufacturing facility produces the majority of our printed products.

We are an active member of the PSDA (Print Services Distribution Association), the leading industry trade association. Tully-Wihr conforms to the approved business standards and practices of the PSDA.

Tully-Wihr is also a member of the PODi, a not-for-profit industry consortium formed in 1996. Its charter is to foster the growth of the digital printing industry through market and standards development activities. PODi constantly monitors market and technology trends in the industry and shares information through seminars, independent research, white papers, articles, and the Web. PODi promotes interoperability through the PPML suite of open, XML based standards, test suites, and certification.
