Tully Wihr's Executive Team

Gerry Knoll
President

I began my career in the printing industry more than 35 years ago. I started in the summer of ’72 in the warehouse at the original Tully-Wihr location in San Francisco. I had no idea, then, that this part-time summer job would ultimately become my career choice and my passion. I spent the first 6 years of my career working at the ground level in the warehouse and then moved on to the print shop.

In 1979, I began training to transfer to the sales department. This new role would become a part of me that I could never completely leave behind. I began working full-time in sales in 1981 and was elected to the Board of Directors and became Partner in 1986. In 1998, I was elected to my current role as President. I am still heavily involved with the sales department because it keeps me in tune with our customers and their ever changing needs and challenges.

I believe that working my way up from the ground level gives me a unique presidential perspective. I am fully aware that success comes from building and maintaining a strong team from entry-level positions to the highest executive level. We are only as good as our weakest link.

Everything we do at Tully-Wihr is focused on providing the highest level of customer care and support that we can offer.

George W. Smith, CDC
Sr. Vice President, Partner
Associates Degree in Liberal Arts & Fire Science, San Mateo College

I am responsible for new business, maintaining existing contracts, and ongoing relationships with existing customers.

I joined the United States Marine Corps in 1966, served in Vietnam (’68–’69), and was honorably discharged in 1970. I graduated from the College of San Mateo with degrees in Liberal Arts (1973) and Fire Science (1975), with a minor in Business Management.

I was a member of the San Mateo City Fire Department from 1972 to 1979, when I retired due to an injury. In 1979, I joined the Tully-Wihr Company as a salesperson. I attained my Certified Forms Consultant (CFC) certification in December of 1987, Advanced Certificate of Knowledge in 1988, and Certified Document Consultant (CDC) accreditation in August 2001. I joined the Tully-Wihr management team in 1995 and became a partner in 1998.

Representing Tully-Wihr, I have been actively involved with the Western Business Forms Association (WBFA), the National Business Forms Association (NBFA), and the Print Services Distribution Association (PSDA; formerly the DMIA) for many years. I have served on or chaired various industry committees; I was National Chairman for the Healthcare Special Interest Group in 2002 and 2003 and was a member of the DMIA Board of Directors, 2001–2004. As part of the TW team, I'm afforded the opportunity to help our customers solve problems, the satisfaction derived from helping them is what motivates me.

I reside in San Mateo, CA with my wife of 35 years, LaReine. We have two grown children, Gregory and Valerie, and two grandchildren, Isabella and Jack.

Jim Knoll
Vice President, Partner

I started working for Tully-Wihr in 1985, hired as a sales representative. I have been in outside sales ever since, based in the San Francisco Bay Area (Silicon Valley). Most of my accounts have been and still are in the health care field, but I also manage accounts in the banking, software, and electronics industries.

I have served on the Tully-Wihr management team since 1988 and became a partner in 1998.

Over the past 22 years, one thing has remained consistent with me and our company: our dedication to customer service. I’m proud to say that we offer the best customer service possible, and that’s what separates us from all the others.

Douglas V. Dunn, CDC
Chief Operations Officer, Partner

Thirty-five years ago I began my career in the print industry working part time after high school. I later attended the University of Washington, working on a degree in Oceanography. In 1979, I accepted an offer to be part of the team that opened Tully-Wihr’s printing operation. I had no idea at that time that a career path in the print industry would be such a rewarding choice. In the early years of my print career I built a solid foundation working in design, pre press, print production, finishing, and then production management.

In 1985, I began my administrative career as plant manager of Tully-Wihr’s print operations and found my true calling. I quickly found that my true strengths lie in motivating and getting the most out of others as well as having passion for directing the printing operation to support the needs of our clients.

With the use of technology and improved workflow, we quickly shortened the production cycle. Like many at Tully-Wihr, I believe that technology, employed with proper timing, is a tool that will continue to support both Tully-Wihr and our clients.

In my current role as Tully-Wihr’s Chief Operating Officer, I have the opportunity to be part of the team that will guide Tully-Whir into a truly global marketplace. With new tools available that take advantage of the Internet and automated workflow, we have put our clients’ data at their fingertips.

I am very excited to be in my current role at a time that allows for so much improvement in our ability to support our clients.

Donna Matekel, CDC
Operations Manager

I have been in the printing industry for 23 years. I began my career in manufacturing, working in the bindery department at GKM Corp. I spent some time in pre-press and eventually moved to the office, working in customer service. In 1987, I moved to the distributor arena as a customer service representative for the Tully-Wihr Company. In the early ’90s, I was promoted to the sales department and spent the next 7 years managing several major health care accounts. After a few years, I was promoted to Regional Office Manager and performed the duties this role required while continuing to handle my responsibilities of Account Manager. In 1998, I left sales and was promoted to Operations Manager for the entire Tully-Wihr operation. I left Tully-Wihr briefly in 2003 and worked for a manufacturer again as the Sacramento Plant Manager for Sterling Business Forms, Inc. Because people are my passion, I returned to Tully-Wihr in 2005 and currently remain in the role of Operations Manager.

A top priority is to focus on continuously improving the service our customers receive. Part of this goal is accomplished by maintaining a positive environment in the workplace, where employees are encouraged to work independently and to grow through education and experience. We are continually looking for new and innovative ways to improve and streamline our workflow, thereby increasing productivity.

It is my goal to provide unparalleled service and support to our clients and business partners.

Mike Chulick
Director of Applied Technologies

Prior to joining Tully-Wihr, I worked in various capacities for the Xerox Corporation for 28 years. In the early 1980s, I was part of an implementation team that designed, installed, and maintained the largest computer network in northern Texas. The network consisted of print, file, mail, and communications servers, as well as a couple hundred workstations.

In 1992, I was part of the team responsible for launching the DocuTech Production and Network Printer in Sacramento, CA. The DocuTech, a high-speed digital printer, revolutionized the printing industry, creating what is known today as print on demand.

For the past 12 years I have worked closely with marketing executives to provide document management and printing solutions. My responsibilities include documenting customer challenges and objectives and delivering results. I have been responsible for implementing all necessary software and hardware components as well as integrating solutions into the customer’s existing environment.

I have worked with a variety of customers including Enloe, Catholic Healthcare West, Sutter Hospitals, Hewlett Packard, Chico State, and Raley’s, as well as many state and local government agencies. I customize solutions to meet client requirements for quicker turnaround and improved workflow. Some of these solutions include one-to-one personalized marketing, customized price books, and mainframe integrations.

I was part of a team that advanced Tully-Wihr's offering in the digital arena, with both high-speed monochrome and digital color printing. I am very excited about opportunities in the integrated campaign solutions marketplace. These are invigorating times at Tully-Wihr; I’m excited to be working on our Web-to-print solutions, integrated workflow solutions, and variable data solutions via the Web.

I am known for my excellent listening skills, humor, and ability to deliver results. I thrive on thinking out of the box and creating unique solutions that enable customers to obtain desired results. I firmly believe that delivering excellent customer service is the most important element in developing business relationships.
